Open Network Lab, Japan’s first seed accelerator program, was launched in 2010 by Digital Garage. We brought this expertise and community to Hokkaido in 2018 to start Open Network Lab HOKKAIDO (Onlab HOKKAIDO) with the mission of “incubating startups from Hokkaido that can compete on the global stage.” Based in Sapporo, this accelerator program develops startups in the seed stage.
From our base in Hokkaido, we work to build a startup ecosystem in Hokkaido by investing in startups in the seed stage and beyond that aim to do business across the globe. We have directly invested in companies such as Farmnote Holdings, Inc. (HQ: Obihiro City), which offers IoT solutions for the dairy farming and livestock industries, and Agri Info Design,Ltd. (HQ: Obihiro City), a company in the agricultural IT/ICT field.
We are participating as a secretariat in the STARTUP HOKKAIDO Executive Committee, a project that aims to build an ecosystem in which startups are continuously created in Hokkaido and develop to a global scale. We also promote open innovation projects by matching private companies with startups.

We will transform the sites that are about to change with practical and comfortable “tukumo” that have been developed in more than 15 types of workplaces and applications, such as DX in the primary industry and equipment management.

RAINBOW Inc. is a biotechnology startup formed at Hokkaido University’s Department of Neurosurgery. Its original HUNS001 technology is for autologous bone marrow stromal cell (BMSC) transplantation directly into the portion of the brain near where a stroke occurred. HUNS001 was developed to offer high quality, effectiveness, safety, and economy, and RAINBOW was established in 2019 to bring this technology to society. In a physician-led clinical trial on transplantation therapy using HUNS001 for stroke patients, some patients who could not walk were able to do so after the administration of HUNS001. RAINBOW’s main vision is to bring this therapy into widespread use around the world.
Agri Info Design,Ltd. supports agriculture through IT, including its AgriBus-NAVI that uses GPS for tractor positioning to assist fertilization and other farming tasks. By installing AgriBus-NAVI on a smartphone or other device on existing tractors, the user can see where tractors are located and which directions they are moving. AgriBus-NAVI also uses self-steering to assist with operation. This makes it possible to carry out tasks in straight lines and at regular intervals, even in large fields with no visual markers. AgriBus-NAVI prevents the over-application of fertilizer and agricultural chemicals due to redundant or forgotten tasks, which can help cut material costs.
Farmnote Inc. is an agricultural ICT solution company that promotes smart agriculture for improved productivity and efficiency in the dairy farming and livestock industries. Its offerings include Farmnote, a cloud-based cattle control system, and Farmnote Color, an IoT sensor system utilizing artificial intelligence. These make it possible to determine when dairy and beef cattle are likely to come into heat and detect early signs of illness. Farmnote also operates SKYARC Co., Ltd., a web integration company, and Farmnote Dairy Platform Inc., which is aiming to operate its own farm.
